What a wonderful time we had with Jonathan Markson Tennis over this Easter weekend! Not only has my tennis improved - I have more confidence and energy and am therefore able to enjoy this fascinating game much, much more. After 4 days of 5 hours a day tennis I was blissfully exhausted. The exhaustion was temporary; the joie de vivre has remained. I'm sure all the coaches were wonderful, but I have to add that Gabrielle, Andrea, Rob and Andy managed to work the magic trick of teaching me while having me almost permanently doubled up with laughter. THANK-YOU!!! X
I was told- in writing via e mail that the first day there would be a fifteen minute session where people would be rated and moved groups if not appropriate. A coach was missing so this did not happen and I was in a group with people who didn't hit the ball with any pace. I wanted to move up, i asked to and was told that would happen the next day. Instead the next day, without the head coach Andrea looking at my standard of tennis, 2 men were moved up and I was kept in the same group. My tennis got worse over the week and I didn't enjoy it at all.*Possible Litigeous Comment removed by Feefo*
We are sorry to hear of your disappointment. We would like to address a couple of things. We had a coach missing but this coach would have been additional cover (we always try to have more coaches than we need for just this scenario) and was not linked to our group allocation. We did make several groups changes on the first day and subsequent days which we tried to do fairly. Group allocation is carried out by the whole coaching team.
We keep returning to Jonathan Markson in Praia da Luz (seven or eight times in 16 years I think, various times of the year, with and without children) and always enjoy the coaching, location and atmosphere.
The Baia da Luz appartments are high quality and conveniently located for the courts, pool and the Alloro restaurant (excellent Italian-style food). Just a short stroll to the other shops, restaurants and the beach.
We rarely return to our other holiday destinations but can't imagine going anywhere else for a tennis holiday really- that probably says it all!
Well run and fun!
Thank you :)
I loved the fact we had different focus on each day. I managed to learn a couple of new things from each coach (although far away from mastering them :-)). Also, we were told about different tactics on double and single games.
Our coaches were super friendly and they could easily point out how I should improve. After four days of training, I see the ball differently and think a lot more before I hit.
P.S. would be great to have more video analyses!
Great feedback, thanks. We are really pleased that you enjoyed the programme. We think you have made a great point about learning new things and thinking more! A clinic is only a few days so we try to share knowledge with you so you can notice what needs to change and then put it into practice. Your development really starts when you get to your home courts. Keep enjoying your tennis and hope to see you again.
I can't think of continuing my learning process with someone else now. The coaches were impressively skilled and understood what each one of us needed. A mix of patience, skill and humour. This is great value for money. As a beginner I thought I would not get as far in four days. The credit goes to the method. I would do it again every week if I could.
You really impressed the coaches with your attitude and development. Keep going and you will make great progress!
Highly professional and very friendly. Very well organised 4-day weekend in Barnes. It was great to have sessions with the different coaches so that we could get different perspectives and coaching styles. Excellent coaching on technique and tactics. Would definitely recommend and hope to be back for a residential course in the future. Thank you! Rhi
Thank you. Keep in touch!
The coaches were excellent. They were approachable, and you felt comfortable asking questions. The drills were thorough and the programme suited me. I liked at the last day tournament that those that did not want to take part had the option of doing what they wanted with a coach, which was more drills. It was also very enjoyable.
Great feedback thanks and good point about the option of tournament play and continued drills. We try and be flexible in our programme so very pleased this was appreciated.
A brilliant camp, lots learned and was great fun as well. Would definitely recommend.
Thank you so much!
Very good week of tennis. Nice coaches who gave lots of individual feedback and kept the training interesting
Thank you , we will pass this on to the team :)
Really good experienced coaches at Algarve. Nice astro courts. Good experience on the tennis side of the holiday. I would give the coaches 5 star. Organisation on the UK side could be better. Information on flights (the fact that flights are not included should be highlighted on your holiday summary on your webpage to make it clearer), airport transfer (shuttle bus) etc should be given out earlier before the booking not after. The hotel itself is very basic need upgrading. Lack of access of drinking water has been a problem. It costs 3 Euro to buy a bottle of 1.5L at the hotel which costs actually 30cents in the supermarket. One can't carry 5 day worth of water from one trip to the supermarket. If the coaches could help buying bulk water for us it could have been helpful. Free wifi signal is pathetic in the bar area only. If you just move a couple of tables you lose the signal. Otherwise, have to pay 10 Euro per device for use in your own room. The cost of the holiday works out much more expensive than the advertised price once you paid for flights, parking, airport transfer and food. It worked out to nearly £900 for me - again wished I knew that before I booked.
Thank you for your feedback. We are very pleased you enjoyed your tennis coaching and appreciate your lovely comments (we pass these on to our coaching team). We would like to state that we only ever sell and promote tennis and accommodation packages. We do clearly list on our website that flights are not included. It is written on each venue page and is not something we have had from clients before. We will look to see if we can add this on additional pages.
The communication about the booking and the holiday itself was superb. I can't find anything to complain about
Great holiday, great tennis course. The whole experience was totally worth it: Algarve is a fantastic location and tennis coaches at Jonathan Markon are very professional. I would surely recommend it.
Thank you - this has made our day in the office as this is what we aspire to! We will pass all feedback onto our coaches, so thank you.
Yes we would buy again, excellent coaches and facilities
Thank you for your great feedback. The hotel is very well located to allow players to focus on their tennis! We are open all year so do let us know if you can escape for some tennis again!
I had a wonderful time. The standard of coaching was excellent and I really felt that my tennis improved! the accommodation was lovely and all in a beautiful setting.
Perfect! We hope you have a great summer of tennis.
Brilliant coaches with fun and well organized lessons. The hotel was quite basic but as I spent most my time either at lessons or playing with the other players it was fine for what I needed it for. I would definitely recommend it.
Brilliant! We love to hear this kind of feedback as it helps other clients. We regularly stay in the hotel ourselves and always try to be clear with clients what to expect. It is hotel suitable for purpose but is not 5 star! Have a great summer of tennis.
very good coaching, nice staff. quite pricey, the only reason I didn't put 5 stars.
Excellent coaching as always - well prepared and hosted perfectly. Only slight complaint would be that this was advertised as an advanced week but in several cases the level was not advanced which made it hard work for the coaches to split the groups. Accommodation and breakfast good - only complaints are to change the coffee and orange juice at breakfast for the real thing... the ones currently on offer are positively awful!
Our tennis week has been superb. Ali and Alex have given us a real head start for when we go back home to join in our local club social sessions. We are staying on for another week of sight seeing and some more tennis but not a coaching week, simply practicing what we've learned together, although my husband has a 1:1 lesson booked for this afternoon which is our first 'day off'. He's hooked!
We love it that our holiday includes use of any of the courts, the little club house/bistro/bar is perfect for relaxing, chatting, laughing and watching (and learning!) activity on the courts below. I am most impressed by the cleanliness everywhere - inside and out. There seems to be a real pride in this amazing place.
Our very roomy apartment is kitted out with everything we have at home and there is an abundance of clean spare bedding, towels etc. in the under-bed storage. We have plenty of wardrobe/drawer space, lots of kitchen utensils and plenty of consumables.
Everybody is so nice here and can't seem to do enough for us, all in our group of six said the same. We all had great fun!
Coaching was excellent- I've been in a few tennis holidays and both Louis and Vasco were the best tennis coaches I've had- I learned a lot and my game improved. Accommodation also excellent. Luz is lovely, but perhaps quiet (it was early March).
Really enjoyed the tennis experience (the guys were great!) and the region is fantastic. Have some criticisms about the food and beds. In a region which prides itself on the freshness of its food and quality of its coffee, it was very disappointing to find neither in the Luz Bay hotel. The whole breakfast experience was made worse by the 90's power ballads on a constant loop. Also, my bed was 'lumpy'.
Thank you for taking time to give feedback. We are so pleased you enjoyed the tennis. We are sorry to hear about your issues with the bed and breakfast. We have passed your comments (not your name) on to the hotel management but would also like to take this opportunity to encourage guests to mention these issues with the staff as we have in the past found them to be extremely accommodating. If your issues do not get resolved whilst on your holiday then you can always email us and we will try and help.
This was a great experience. I had a wonderful time and learned so much. Luis and Vasco were excellent and very patient with me. I would certainly book another holiday with Jonathan Markson Tennis.
The only negative was the quality of the food at the hotel. It was terrible. The hotel was kept very clean but is looking a little tired and could do with a bit of refresh. If I returned to play tennis here I would definitely consider staying at a different hotel or in self catering.
Thank you so much. We hope to see you again in the future. We have lots of great venues to explore from the clay courts in Mallorca to the grass courts of Cambridge University!
Service from Luca at Jonathan Markson team was excellent and coach Mike provided great coaching, it was just a shame there weren't more players on the course.
I very much enjoyed the week, Vasco and Luis are good coaches and the resort was ok as usual.
Thank you :)
A really enjoyable week of tennis. Really nice coaches. Only point to make I was surprised that the Friday afternoon tennis tournament we were charged for and not included in the price of the holiday. Overall I would definitely go on another tennis holiday.
One of the stand-outs from the Markson weekend (London Tennis Camp - August) is the quality of the coaches. Unlike some other tennis holidays where the coaches are simply on a year out, Markson likes to hire fully qualified teaching pros with years of experience. You can ask the most difficult of questions and you know they will have an answer. More importantly for me, you can ask the most basic of questions and they will take time to work with you. I was struggling with my double-handed backhand and one of the coaches took 20 minutes with me to go over all the fundamentals (grip, body position, footwork etc) to ensure I was comfortable. The 50 best ways to improve yourself - "this is a fun activity holiday," says olivia macleod, veteran of jonathan markson tennis camps in both oxford and the algarve. in a group of six she enjoyed mornings of tuition from excellent coaches and endured revealing video analysis of her game. she left fitter and infinitely more proficient.
For us, the set-up at the Jonathan Markson Tennis Centre in the Algarve works perfectly. Three hours of tennis tuition every morning, then the rest of the day free to do as much or as little as you wish.
It’s a low-key affair, a world away from the big centres like Val da Lobo or Forte Village, but one that works very well. There are five courts in total, three of them brand new this year. Coaching groups are a maximum of six people, although often fewer, which means the tuition is really tailored to each individual. (Read the full article)
I came away with a reconstructed serve that has come along no end. The coaching was deceptively easy-going and the drills were enormous fun. everyone on the course felt they had progressed.
It was clear that, while the coaching was seriously intensive on this course, the social side counted for almost as much. in no time at all the social bonding was becoming firmly fixed. did our tennis benefit from the course? certainly.
The Sunday Times
Physically the camp is demanding but not exhausting. i did learn a lot. i had a great deal of fun.
By the end of the week i was still cursing loose forehands, double faults and fluffed volleys but i had improved almost every aspect of my game – and my confidence.
British Airways Magazine
From my experience of attending both the oxford tennis camp and algarve tennis centre, Jonathan Markson Tennis tends to acquire talented coaches with a sense of humour – and thus hard work is disguised as a lot of fun.
It was encouraging how quickly the coaches could single out flaws.
Serve and Volley Magazine
The coaching is done through a variety of exercises, drill and consultation breaks, so people have constant stimulation and a good deal of fun.
Chris Bauers (Eurosport)
It was all great fun, but between the good-natured banter, an expert analytical eye was at play, correcting obvious faults and praising our better strokes... A lot of laughter mixed with serious endeavour. This was our first experience of a group holiday and we enjoyed it thoroughly.
The views over the famous luz bay are stunning, the cottage-style apartments excellently appointed and the climate pretty much perfect. Walking the cobbled streets of this old fishing village at night, one is struck by the timelessness of the place... Whether you are a of beginner, intermediate or advanced standard your game is guaranteed to improve. the coaches see to that.
