My 9-year-old son had a great time playing tennis with mostly excellent coaching (one coach taking the younger children was a little weaker, but he still had a good time with him). The admin was smooth. There weren't enough children for him to play at the ball level he is at, but that was probably largely because of the reduced numbers due to the need to social distance. The facilities are great and he loved the opportunity to play on clay and on grass. The only issue was that he felt an older child was unkind to him at lunchtime, which seemed to be almost entirely unsupervised. I mentioned it to the coaches which resulted in some improvements but not a complete fix.
Excellent coach. Nice venue.
It was a very enjoyable week, good structure and our coach Simon was excellent.
Great tennis camp for our children, aged 9 and 11! The coaches provided a variety of drills that kept things interesting, and encouraged everyone to elevate their game. The coach/student ratio was great, allowing a more personalized experience. The Head Coach, Erwan, made sure that everything was running smoothly, and actively provided valued feedback. We plan to book again next summer. Thank you for a great week!
Thank you, see you next year!
Poor Organization, it wasn’t improvement course. For example we’ve been split into 3 group to practice service, but no indication what, how and where to improve. It’s very technical game u need guidance and practice on certain movements etc.Young coaches, with very good skills, how to play, but no how to teach.
We are very sorry you felt this way about the course. We have had lots of great feedback about the programme in London but we realise we don't always get it right for everyone. I have shared this feedback with my team and we have discussed your experience and will use it as a learning example.
Well organised with clear instructions and responsive to our questions. Head office worked well and coaches at the camp were attentive and flexible to the conditions and the needs of the group.
Thank you so much of the lovely feedback. We have a lovely team and I know they will greatly appreciate your comments.
Excellent and expert coaching. Small groups meant a lot of individual attention.
Great week of tennis, would definitely recommend
A very well organised camp with excellent coaches too!
It was a great week with lots of guidance with excellent tips on technique and opportunities to put them into practice. Erwan and his team of Dan, Matt And Sacha were really encouraging and helpful. I would certainly recommend the course and take it again.
Thank you for your great comments - the team will be super happy!
We enjoyed a great week of tennis at the Jonathan Markson Tennis Camp in London. Erwan, the managing coach, did a fantastic job of making sure everyone had the perfect experience. The positive and supportive attitude from the coaching staff made a big difference, and the variety of drills was much appreciated. Will be booking again!
Thank you for your lovely comments. We are all so very lucky to be back on court. Keep enjoying your tennis.
A great coaching with such a beautiful setting in Oxford.
We loved your energy on the court! Keep enjoying your tennis
Well organised. Good coaches, with a lot of good hints.
But the courts could be in better condition. This might be the responsibility of the site, but Markson could have checked that and asked for elimination of defects in before.
Thank you for your lovely feedback. I am vey pleased you enjoyed the tennis coaching. We did do a site visit before the camp but we are limited on what we can do and what the centre can do at this time. However, I will pass your comments on to the facilities manager and keep up the pressure that we have already been applying. Thank you.
The office was extremely helpful and efficient during the booking process . The training was fun and very professional . Luis and Riccardo and Tiago are exceptional players and great fun to learn from .
The Hotel Luz was fine and staff superb although the rooms could do with a bit of a spruce up.
I recently enjoyed two outstanding weeks of tennis camp with coaches Luis and Ricardo. Their coaching was instructive and fun. The staff and accommodation at Luz Bay Hotel were excellent. This was the fifth tennis camp that I have participated in and was, for me, the most fun. I hope to return to Luz Bay camp next February.
Fantastic coaches, extra tennis in afternoon, lovely courts. Plenty of fun in evenings. Luz, Portugal.
Thank you. We really appreciate all feedback. I have passed this on to our Algarve team.
I had a very nice holiday with many good tennis lessons. Before I left, answers on my mails were answered quickly.
One tip: ask people if it's okay to share contact information with other participants before the holiday starts. That way people can contact each other about transport, accommodation etcetera.
Thanks for your lovely comments. It was another great week so I am very pleased you enjoyed it. I am also really pleased you mentioned the idea of sharing contact info pre-course as we are launching this service for 2020! All players signing up to the course will be able to 'opt-in' to the course group so that they can arrange things such as travel with other players attending the course.
I thought the coaching was really good- definitely above average. However the hotel was pretty poor. The food at the hotel was average at best. There were a decent selection of salads at the evening meal, but the hot food was not particularly tasty. The breakfast was okay, but could have had actual fresh orange juice (as opposed to the watered down version that was served), and a greater selection of cereals. The room was adequate but very simple and plain. The bed wasn’t particularly comfortable. Staff were nice but too thin on the ground- just one waiter at each meal service- which meant we had to wait a long time for drinks orders to be taken, and for plates to be cleared. We had a break from tennis every day but the hotel was not prepared for this- no coffee, sometimes no staff to take the dinks orders, sometimes no ice.
Overall my recommendation to the owners / management of this hotel would be that it needs some decent investment, and more staff. It’s such a shame as I was looking forward to a bit of luxury, but was disappointed. The tennis, however, was great fun, and thank you to Luiz and Ricardo.
Thank you for your feedback. It is great to receive such lovely compliments about our JMT coaching team. We have emailed you directly regarding the dinner at the hotel. JMT only sells B&B at the Luz Bay Hotel as we would always recommend that our clients enjoy the lovely restaurants that are in and around Luz. Our local coaches are always happy to give recommendations.
After our email discussions, we understand that you purchased the meals at a discounted rate directly from the hotel on arrival (so not part of the JMT package). This was not part of our package that we sold. It is a real shame that the hotel evening meals are not up to scratch. We have raised this several times with the management but is not something that has been sorted out. There are many reasons for this but for the moment we suggest clients do not buy the evening meals.
We love feedback and even though it was not us that sold these meals we will still take learnings from it. We have now added text into our client communications that suggests clients liaise with our coaches (as most already do) for local restaurant recommendations.
We loved it!!! This was our first ever tennis camp and both the coaches and participants made it a positive experience. There was a good balance of skill development and playing and the hotel package with Valentin including half board was convenient.
We had lots of fun, made some new friends and would definitely consider going back. Our coaches included Ali and Ariel first 2 days and Ariel and Oliver final 2 days.
Fantastic feedback, thank you.
All very well organised and excellent coaches
Excellent coaching. Poor coffee facilities and on occasion non-existent
Excellent hotel with very professional and friendly staff combined with a well run tennis course which was just a short walk away.
The tennis coaching was excellent, the courts themselves very good, shame that the resort services were poor where the tennis coaching was held.
The accommodation itself was fine
What can be improved:
1. Organisation - The instructions to get to the camp were wrong: Melvin and Mathys were sent to Oxford rather than Brighton!
2. Welcome at the camp - For those attending the camp by themselves, the welcome instructions were very poor and the players had to find out about the instructions by themselves.
3. Food - The quality and the choice of the meals were not matching the standard that you could expect at a tennis camp in which players are practicing tennis many hours a day. Example: french fries, pizza, nuggets, etc. More healthy meals would be appreciated!
Thank you for your feedback. As this is a public forum I need to address the points raised. Before I do I must say that I am a little surprised as our team thought the boys really enjoyed their stay at the camp. We received very different feedback - even to the point that we thought they were so happy that they would return next year. We do appreciate all feedback though and respect each person's right to post their review. However, we feel we do need to give these points with some background
1. The Arrival details. We got the final communication wrong. We accidentally sent details to arrive in Oxford and not Brighton. This was our mistake and something we have never done before and will never do again. However, in all previous communication with the client (including our large welcome pack), we did include clear details on how to travel to Brighton. In addition, the client had been to the camp previously.
2. Welcome -On arrival at camp. The boys, despite being in the wrong camp, were allocated rooms very quickly. Every Sunday evening there is a welcome meeting where the camp is explained in detail. After dinner, there is a meeting where the schedule of the week is discussed and each player receives a player book with the breakdown of the week. Each morning, before the start of the tennis, we have a welcome meeting where we explain the order of the day. This is the first time we have had this feedback about the lack of communication because we have these steps in place.
3. Food - We can provide any player thinking about coming on the camp with an example menu. Each meal always has a salad/vegetable offering as well as carbohydrate and protein (key for players). We do sometimes include food that is requested by the young players (as many will enjoy at home) but this is not a typical menu described.
We take all feedback seriously and have discussed this feedback with our whole team. We would encourage any client who attends our camp to talk to us if they have any issues as we are very friendly and will sort things out straight away. In Oxford, we have an Operations Manager whose main job is to look after the needs of children from medication to homesickness to clarifying communication.
very good ad professional coaching
One of the stand-outs from the Markson weekend (London Tennis Camp - August) is the quality of the coaches. Unlike some other tennis holidays where the coaches are simply on a year out, Markson likes to hire fully qualified teaching pros with years of experience. You can ask the most difficult of questions and you know they will have an answer. More importantly for me, you can ask the most basic of questions and they will take time to work with you. I was struggling with my double-handed backhand and one of the coaches took 20 minutes with me to go over all the fundamentals (grip, body position, footwork etc) to ensure I was comfortable. The 50 best ways to improve yourself - "this is a fun activity holiday," says olivia macleod, veteran of jonathan markson tennis camps in both oxford and the algarve. in a group of six she enjoyed mornings of tuition from excellent coaches and endured revealing video analysis of her game. she left fitter and infinitely more proficient.
For us, the set-up at the Jonathan Markson Tennis Centre in the Algarve works perfectly. Three hours of tennis tuition every morning, then the rest of the day free to do as much or as little as you wish.
It’s a low-key affair, a world away from the big centres like Val da Lobo or Forte Village, but one that works very well. There are five courts in total, three of them brand new this year. Coaching groups are a maximum of six people, although often fewer, which means the tuition is really tailored to each individual. (Read the full article)
I came away with a reconstructed serve that has come along no end. The coaching was deceptively easy-going and the drills were enormous fun. everyone on the course felt they had progressed.
It was clear that, while the coaching was seriously intensive on this course, the social side counted for almost as much. in no time at all the social bonding was becoming firmly fixed. did our tennis benefit from the course? certainly.
The Sunday Times
Physically the camp is demanding but not exhausting. i did learn a lot. i had a great deal of fun.
By the end of the week i was still cursing loose forehands, double faults and fluffed volleys but i had improved almost every aspect of my game – and my confidence.
British Airways Magazine
From my experience of attending both the oxford tennis camp and algarve tennis centre, Jonathan Markson Tennis tends to acquire talented coaches with a sense of humour – and thus hard work is disguised as a lot of fun.
It was encouraging how quickly the coaches could single out flaws.
Serve and Volley Magazine
The coaching is done through a variety of exercises, drill and consultation breaks, so people have constant stimulation and a good deal of fun.
Chris Bauers (Eurosport)
It was all great fun, but between the good-natured banter, an expert analytical eye was at play, correcting obvious faults and praising our better strokes... A lot of laughter mixed with serious endeavour. This was our first experience of a group holiday and we enjoyed it thoroughly.
The views over the famous luz bay are stunning, the cottage-style apartments excellently appointed and the climate pretty much perfect. Walking the cobbled streets of this old fishing village at night, one is struck by the timelessness of the place... Whether you are a of beginner, intermediate or advanced standard your game is guaranteed to improve. the coaches see to that.
