Overall, I thought the tennis coaching was of a very good standard.
The facilities at the Barnes centre were pretty poor, e.g. toilets, water tap being miles away.
We had some old tennis balls to start the course mixed in with some new ones which was a bit disappointing.
Though the parking was good..
I would recommend it, just check the weather as all the courts were outside.
I am very pleased to hear that you enjoyed thecoaching. The facilities at Barnes have all been updated but unfortunately, it will be a few more weeks before everything is open. There will be a splendid new cafe, water taps and changing rooms. Apologies for the balls - this is my oversight and won't happen again. We had 5 out of 7 baskets of brand new balls but 2 baskets of balls used on clay the previous week.
Good course - good structure - good people
Very well organized, great, highly qualified and friendly coaches and just generally it was a wonderful experience. I had a great time!!! Will come back!
Wow. We are super hyped to receive this. Thank you, much appreciated. Keep enjoying your tennis :)
The tennis was great - really good group and coaches were spot on with the approach. The hotel however was another story, a huge disappointment. A 4* hotel, with no tea or coffee in the room, very basic breakfast, poor quality beds, bathroom supplies not refreshed every day, hot water running out after 1 shower. People who had come back for the tennis did not return to the hotel.
We are really pleased that you enjoyed your tennis and will pass on your comments to our team. We are very proud of our JMT coaches across the world.
We understand that the hotel has 4 stars displayed on the outside (and perhaps on their own literature) but JMT does not recognise it as such and does not sell it or price it as a 4-star hotel. I am going to make this clearer in our communication as it has been raised by a couple of clients recently and is certainly never our intention. I have no idea why they have 4 stars on their building and I agree that it is completely wrong. There is no Universal star rating enforcement which is definitely something that we would support.
We do communicate that there is no tea and coffee in the rooms during the sales process although there is a communal kitchen that can be used.
The hotel is sold as a value location ideal for tennis. However, you do raise points which will be addressed with the management of the hotel as they are disappointing to hear. Thank you for your feedback.
Good instruction on ground strokes. Helped with the serve.
Could improve with more succinct descriptions.
Thank you for your feedback.
Excellent Service and very friendly and professional. Luis and Riccardo are top instructors and worked to make the whole group better players.
An excellent course run by attentive coaches. It was hard work but I really enjoyed the week. The course was organised well with clear objectives and excellent feedback. Although there were different levels of players i.e young/old and intermediate/advanced the coaches made everyone feel comfortable and valued. There was no down time and we all went home in the evening satisfied ....and exhausted (in a good way).
The course was excellent value and probably the best coaching I have ever experienced. As an older player I was a little apprehensive about my ability to do an extensive course but it was fine - my knees actually felt better after day 3!
My 5th JM tennis camp.
Great coaches - they make the week
My family (wife and two kids, age 11 and 13) and I just came back from a week in Luz at one of Jonathan Markson's tennis holidays. We had a terrific time! The kids really enjoy the lessons and so did my wife and I (possibly even more). Luis (the head coach) and Ricardo were terrific. I wished they took the kids for a day or two as well as they were fun and full of good tips (especially Ricardo). We stayed at the Baia da Luz apartment resort, which is really nice. Large apartments, two pools (one for adults and one for kids), two additional tennis courts and one restaurant. The apartment was serviced twice during the week and there was a garage space available. The village is relatively small but with a very nice beach and some good restaurants. It is very close (10 min drive max) to Lagos and about one hour west of Faro, which is the closest airport. The weather was extremely pleasant basically the entire week in spite of being the last week of October.
Absolutely loved my experience at the Barnes Tennis Camp this October. Steve is the highlight of the course! Well done Jonathan Markson Tennis!
Wonderful week with coaches Luis Ricardo Rui and Benoît. Can't wait to come back next year !
the breakfast was better
the coaches were very friendly
they gave us good tips
Paco and Carlos are fantastic Coaches and were able to explain how to improve my game.
It was such a great experience!
Another great experience, thank you
I thought the weekend was great and they did a great job of maximizing the time even with the downpour on Sunday. Our coach on Monday however while very nice, lacked energy and I would have liked a bit more motivated coaching from her. Had we had better coaching in Monday I would have given 5 stars. Nonetheless i will come back.
everything was efficiently organised, the coaches were personable, helpful and really focused on teaching you things. the other attendees too, were for the most part very nice and friendly.
Cambridge camp Aug 2018
Coaches were excellent with superb technical knowledge and were able to explain complex strokes corrections to the basic player, and on top of this all of them had great personalities!
Set up and organization was top class! With excellent guidance given by the organizers and the coaches
Non tennis activities were a real joy too!
Would visit again
Le service était bon en général, un petit bémol pour la nourriture et la qualité de la literie.
The course was well-structured and paced. All the coaches were very good - Ben, in particular, was excellent. Patient, sensitive to individual coaching requirements, but not losing sight of the group need. There was plenty of variety. The week raised my fitness level, gave me lots of points to work on to improve my game and built my confidence.
Very good courts and coaches, but too many players on the courts for the number of coaches (6-1). Less technical feedback than previous years with better coach/player ratio (4-1). A bit too much free play, would have preferred more specific drills, and certain areas was not at all covered (serve return, smash, backhand slice).
The coaches were great, the weather was British! The courts suffered from the rain, particularly the carpeted courts but I would thoroughly recommend the course to players of all levels including novices. Thanks for a great tennis course!
It has really been a unique experience to attend the tennis camp in Cambridge.
I enjoyed very much the high level of tennis coaching as well as the whole atmosphere that was all around us. The location was also awesome!
It was a very nice opportuntiy to meet interesting people from all over the world, sharing the same passion for tennis.
A special mention to our great coaches Andrea, Carlos, Diego, Gabriele and Paco who contributed with their strong professionalism, their sympathy and empathy to make this camp an outstanding event.
A heartfelt thanks to everybody!
The Tennis camp was a good blend of Tennis and fun. All of the coaches had fun attitudes along with being very knowledgeable about tennis. The training throughout the week was excellent. The singles and doubles tournaments could have been structured better to separate the beginner players from the advanced players so to be more interesting for the players. I also think that it would be nice if this experience could be offered in different cities every year since as an overseas visitor, it would be nice to see a place other than Cambridge if I do the camp again. If the camp location could rotate to other cities with grass courts, I would almost sign up again. But otherwise, a terrific grass court experience in a wonderful city. Well done
One of the stand-outs from the Markson weekend (London Tennis Camp - August) is the quality of the coaches. Unlike some other tennis holidays where the coaches are simply on a year out, Markson likes to hire fully qualified teaching pros with years of experience. You can ask the most difficult of questions and you know they will have an answer. More importantly for me, you can ask the most basic of questions and they will take time to work with you. I was struggling with my double-handed backhand and one of the coaches took 20 minutes with me to go over all the fundamentals (grip, body position, footwork etc) to ensure I was comfortable. The 50 best ways to improve yourself - "this is a fun activity holiday," says olivia macleod, veteran of jonathan markson tennis camps in both oxford and the algarve. in a group of six she enjoyed mornings of tuition from excellent coaches and endured revealing video analysis of her game. she left fitter and infinitely more proficient.
For us, the set-up at the Jonathan Markson Tennis Centre in the Algarve works perfectly. Three hours of tennis tuition every morning, then the rest of the day free to do as much or as little as you wish.
It’s a low-key affair, a world away from the big centres like Val da Lobo or Forte Village, but one that works very well. There are five courts in total, three of them brand new this year. Coaching groups are a maximum of six people, although often fewer, which means the tuition is really tailored to each individual. (Read the full article)
I came away with a reconstructed serve that has come along no end. The coaching was deceptively easy-going and the drills were enormous fun. everyone on the course felt they had progressed.
It was clear that, while the coaching was seriously intensive on this course, the social side counted for almost as much. in no time at all the social bonding was becoming firmly fixed. did our tennis benefit from the course? certainly.
The Sunday Times
Physically the camp is demanding but not exhausting. i did learn a lot. i had a great deal of fun.
By the end of the week i was still cursing loose forehands, double faults and fluffed volleys but i had improved almost every aspect of my game – and my confidence.
British Airways Magazine
From my experience of attending both the oxford tennis camp and algarve tennis centre, Jonathan Markson Tennis tends to acquire talented coaches with a sense of humour – and thus hard work is disguised as a lot of fun.
It was encouraging how quickly the coaches could single out flaws.
Serve and Volley Magazine
The coaching is done through a variety of exercises, drill and consultation breaks, so people have constant stimulation and a good deal of fun.
Chris Bauers (Eurosport)
It was all great fun, but between the good-natured banter, an expert analytical eye was at play, correcting obvious faults and praising our better strokes... A lot of laughter mixed with serious endeavour. This was our first experience of a group holiday and we enjoyed it thoroughly.
The views over the famous luz bay are stunning, the cottage-style apartments excellently appointed and the climate pretty much perfect. Walking the cobbled streets of this old fishing village at night, one is struck by the timelessness of the place... Whether you are a of beginner, intermediate or advanced standard your game is guaranteed to improve. the coaches see to that.
